Okay, so the box office was barely building back up, and yet we have some major news. This weekend, the world box office champion is about to change again. Back in 2009, James Cameron set the Titanic the record, which held for a decade, until 2019, when Avengers: Endgame surpassed it. Well that changes again. Avatar is the best in this movie, now giving Cameron $ 2.8 billion, worldwide. Its re-release in China was what I did in the flick, but it’s pretty impressive, whatever it gets. Kudos to all participants, and enjoy the honor. Something tells me Avengers: Endgame will be coming for it again, before it is said and done.
Here’s a little story from The The Hollywood Reporter:
Sorry, the Avengers.
James Cameron’s popular 2009 epic Avatar Avatar surpassed Marvel’s 2019 supervaganza Avengers: Endgame to reign again as the highest-grossing film ever at the global box office, and has not been adjusted for inflation.
Avatar’s surprise win came as a result of the movie’s re-release in China this weekend, making more than $ 8 million as of Saturday afternoon alone, according to Disney. This brings Avatar’s box office total to $ 2.8 billion, versus $ 2.797 billion for Endgame, which was released in 2019.
Commenting on the achievement, Avatar Producer John Landau said: “We are proud to have reached this great milestone, but Jim and I are so excited that the movie is returning to theaters during these unprecedented times, and we want to thank our Chinese fans for that. For their support. Seriously on the following Avatar movies and we look forward to sharing the continuation of this epic story for years to come. ”
In a tweet late on Saturday morning, Marvel Studios acknowledged the achievement. “Congratulations to @ JimCameron, @ JonLandau and ALL of Na’vi Nation for reclaiming the box office crown!” The studio wrote in a tweet. “We love you 3000.OfficialAvatar.”
The official Avatar account tweeted a photo of a group of fans, all wearing masks, along with a message. “Irayo is for our fans in China to come to see the Avatar on the big screen this weekend! This crown belongs to the Na’vi Nation – it wouldn’t have happened without you.
With the Avengers and avatar-themed art from BossLogic, Avengers: Endgame, the Russo brothers tweeted, “Bring the challenge back to you … JimCameron.”
Good news for Disney, which owns Marvel Studios – it is now home to Avatar as a result of a merger with 20th Century Fox.
Congratulations Avatar …
