The Iranian government has been defying the US sanctions that President Donald Trump reimposed in 2018 when he abandoned the nuclear deal – but has also focused heavily on lifting them.
Talks have been going on with the Biden administration on the issue for weeks, with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani appearing more optimistic than US officials about a deal.
Although Iran’s leaders appear reluctant to admit, the sanctions have exacerbated already serious economic problems – as recent long queues for chickens have shown. BBC Monitoring correspondent Kian Sharifi explains.
