Watch the trailer: A college student prepares the worst alert ever in Emma Seligman’s “Shiva Baby”

From the moment Danielle (Rachel Senute) arrives at Shiva, everything that can go wrong goes wrong. A trailer for Emma Seligman’s movie “Shiva Baby” has been dropped and promises tons of awkward conversations, social mistakes, inappropriate explosions and of course food.

“You can’t just come after the party for a Shiva, and love to reap the benefits of the buffet,” said ex-Daniel Maya (Molly Gordon). Danielle also has the misfortune of meeting her current father (Danny Deverari), his wife (Diana Agron), and his child.

Everyone else, including her parents (Polly Draper and Fred Melamed), wants to know what Danielle is up to, a soon-to-be college graduate. Her father says, “Baby, feminism isn’t exactly what I call a profession.” “It’s not my profession, it’s a lens!” She is dating. Other Shiva guests chime in with questions and comments about Daniel’s career prospects, love life, and weight.

“Shiva Baby” is inspired by the Seligman movie of the same name, which premiered at SXSW 2018 and has been shown at other festivals. The premium version has been played in TIFF, Outfest, and more.

“I’ve always found shivas parties to be the most humorous family event,” Seligman told us. “Despite the fact that someone has died, people still eat bread, complain, show off their children, and push boundaries. I’ve always loved this contrast and thought Shiva would be a totally disturbing and funny place for an insecure young woman to lose her mind.”

“Shiva Baby” arrives in theaters and VOD on April 2nd.
