Fomino Sugiyama is a transgender man, but Japanese law means that he is not legally recognized as a male.
In Japan, you must be sterilized or “unable to conceive indefinitely” before you can legally change sex.
Researchers say that reports of involuntary sterilization have been seen in at least 38 countries around the world over the past 20 years, and women and marginalized groups have been the most affected by this “gross violation of rights.”
We meet Fomino, and another transgender man who has decided to sterilize, to hear the impact of Japan’s policy on their lives.
