In November of 2020, fans were shocked by Erica Jane and Tom Girardi announced their divorce.
Fans have speculated wildly about the causes, citing everything from fraud to a clever financial ploy.
This week, fans of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills received answers many had never imagined.
As of yesterday, Tom lost his license to practice law after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
Us weekly It is reported that on Wednesday, March 10, an affidavit was submitted by clinical psychologist Dr. Nathan Lavid.
In that document, Dr. Lavid affirmed that the 81-year-old suffers from “mild” delusions and weakness.
According to the affidavit, Tom is unable to attend court hearings on any matters and will remain so “for the foreseeable future”.
“Dementia impairs his ability to understand hearing,” wrote Dr. Lavid.
And the affidavit went on: “his emotional distress is directly related to his mental illness.”
Dr. Lavid warned that his “confusion was exacerbated.”
The news comes on the heels of another announcement earlier this week regarding Tom’s Law License.
The California Bar Association declared Tom “ineligible to practice law.”
If you know how difficult it can be to get a legal license for someone, then you know the size of the deal.
Now, it seems clear that Tom’s lack of eligibility is due to his diminished mental capacity.
It takes more than just clear generic signs of epistemic struggles to lose the law’s license.
(This topic was explored extensively late last year, with many in the public questioning how Rudy Giuliani was allowed to practice.)
Tom Girardi previously claimed in court that he was completely bankrupt, saying he had “no money” left.
He is currently being sued by associates of Robert Keys, Robert Finnerty, and Jill O’Callaghan.
Their company, Girardi Keese, also reportedly owes Wells Fargo $ 882,000.
In December of 2020, a judge froze Tom’s assets. (If you know how hard it can be to get a judge to do this, you know how terrible things must be.)
Tom’s brother, Robert Girardi, has been named his caretaker.
“There was an urgent need for Bob Girardi to have the authority to appoint a lawyer in bankruptcy proceedings on behalf of his brother,” Tom’s lawyer explained in February.
Robert claimed in court that Tom’s current epistemic struggles make it impossible for him to manage his case.
He claimed that Tom “is unable to perceive and understand the implications of the pending bankruptcy files against him and the debtor.”
Robert prepares to pursue permanent custody of his brother’s possessions, personal matters, health, and even daily activities.
With Conservatives being a hot topic Among disability rights advocates and the #FreeBritney movement, this topic is now commonplace.
There have been a number of calls to change laws on this issue in order to protect against violations.
However, many have noted that some people need help managing their lives … and Tom might be one of them.
Real Housewives star, Erika, 49, has not commented publicly about Tom’s alleged health issues.
(She accused Tom of cheating on her … and it’s unclear how these reports could change her perspective.)
All of this and more is expected to be rolled out in Season 11 of RHOBHWhich of course is currently filming.
This is really difficult for anyone to go through, and it’s an understandably sensitive topic for Erika, with or without a divorce.
She should weigh how much she will discuss it publicly … but getting this news out publicly may give her permission to discuss it in front of the camera.
Of course, given her area of operation, she might not have a lot of options.
If she doesn’t talk about it herself, we all know her fellow Bravo teammates will ask her about her until she does.
Or just talk about it behind her back.
