China’s 14-year-old Quan Hongzhan beat 15-year-old teammate Chen Yuxi with a new Olympic world record for Olympic gold in the 10-meter diving platform.
Chen entered the event as world champion but Quan dominated once she took the lead in the second round.
She finished the race in 466.20, ahead of Chen’s 425.40, while Australian Melissa Wu, 29, came third with a score of 371.40.
In her Olympic debut, Britain’s Andrea Spindolini Ciriex finished seventh with Louis Tolson in ninth.
Kwan’s gold means China has now won all four of the women’s diving competitions at the Tokyo Games.
Quan and Chen had identical scores after the first round of the plunge, but Quan advanced into the second round after receiving a perfect score – 10 out of all seven judges.
She got the second set of 10 in the fourth round and in the last round, six judges gave her a 10 and a 9.5.
It is Wu’s first individual medal after winning the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics when Chuan was just 18 months old.
