Tehran, Iran (AFP) – Iran’s semi-official news agency Tasnim reported on Saturday that elements of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards shot dead three militants and dismantled their cell in eastern Iran, near the border with Afghanistan.
As a result of an exchange of fire between the IRGC and a “terrorist team”, three militants were killed in Sistan and Baluchistan, according to the report.
Tasnim also said that Guard forces confiscated explosives and weapons from the team, which it said was planning armed activities in the area. The report did not provide any details about the group.
The border region between Iran and Afghanistan has been the scene of occasional clashes between Baloch militants and Iranian forces. Security forces also clashed with drug traffickers in the province, which is on a major smuggling route for Afghan opium and heroin.
