Two South African footballers have become the first athletes in the Olympic Village to be tested for Covid-19, raising fears that the virus could force a growing number of competitors out of the Tokyo Olympics when they begin on Friday.

The two players, Orlando Pirates right-back Tabiso Munyani and Moruka Swallows attacking midfielder Kamohilo Mahlatsi, joined video analyst Mario Masha, who tested positive upon arrival in Tokyo.

“There is a daily check. Masha and Munyani reported high temperatures and positive saliva tests, then they were taken for a nose test and unfortunately they tested positive for Covid-19. Mahlatsi is the latest player to go through the same process.”
