The proportion of Saudi land area covered by forests has remained unchanged since 1990 at around 0.5%. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who aims to transform the economy and society of the petroleum state, announced in late March a plan to plant 10 billion trees over the coming decades to increase the area covered by the existing trees by twelve times.
Abela told Al-Monitor that Saudi Arabia will benefit from careful research for the trees to be planted.
“If it takes 20 years to plant 10 billion trees, that means they have to plant about 1.5 million trees per day.” For comparison, the Let’s Make It Green campaign launched by Saudi Arabia in October 2020 planted 10 million trees over a six-month period.
