The Russian military announced the successful test launch of a new hypersonic cruise missile Zircon on Monday.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the missile was launched from the Admiral Groschkov frigate in the White Sea in northern Russia.

The ministry said the missile had successfully hit a target more than 350 km (217 miles) away on the coast of the Barents Sea.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that the Zircon missile will be able to fly at nine times the speed of sound and have a range of up to 1,000 kilometers.

An earlier test was launched in October, on Putin’s birthday. The Russian leader hailed the event as a “big event” for the country.

“Equipment of our armed forces – the army and the navy – with the most modern and truly unparalleled weapons systems will certainly ensure the defense capability of our country in the long term,” Putin said at the time.
