Readers share how 9/11 changed their view of the world

“September 11, 2001 confirmed to me what most of us know at some level about our country and its leaders, with a few exceptions. Anti-Muslim prejudice, the reckless pursuit of oil, military support for pro-US dictators, out-of-control arms sales, all acts of sabotage, espionage, back-dealing and corruption and propaganda that aligns with that agenda. What changed for me after al-Qaeda brought down the World Trade Center was realizing 1) how weak we were left to ourselves, how good we had become, when we had to realize that one day we would have to pay a price for our self-serving …attitudes and policies, and 2) how little we were willing to give up and learn as a result. The negative feedback was overwhelming, and for a short time we enjoyed the world’s sympathy and support. We could have used that moment for reconciliation and understanding. We could have refocused our efforts to promote cooperation and peace in the All over the region and the world. But we have wasted it in retribution, violence and constant recklessness driven by mass denial, corporate greed, institutional bias and the desire for power.”
