Prince George Cheer to England with his parents, wearing a red and blue tie and a sharp jacket. The couple’s eldest son, 7, looked like his similarly dressed father, the head of the FA. Kate honored her country’s colors by wearing a white jacket.
George reacted enthusiastically to England’s early goal during the match, laughing heartily as he looked at his father and applauded. Then he got into an embrace with his mother during the celebration.
George’s full cheer became an instant meme on British social media.
Before the match, William shared a video message on Instagram wishing the whole team “good luck”.
“To every member of the England squad on and off the bench, I just want to wish you good luck tonight. What a team performance,” he said. “Every team member played their part. Every background team was really essential.”
“You bring out the best in England and we are all behind you. The whole country is behind you. So bring it home.”
Also in attendance were the occasional David Beckham and Tom Cruise who celebrated England’s early goal with a fist.
The celebration did not last long. After Luke Shaw’s early goal, Italy tied the score before the regulation. Italy went on to win the penalty shootout that broke the heart of England.
The royal family’s desperate sight summed up the national heartbreak.
William wrote “heartbreaking” before addressing the English team. “You’ve all come so far, but unfortunately it wasn’t our day this time. You can all hold your heads high, and be very proud of yourself—I know there’s more to come. W.”
