The White House released an announcement Wednesday announcing March 31 as a transgender appearance day. According to th AdvertisingA day that “recognizes generations of struggle, activism and courage” by transgender and non-binary societies. President Joe Biden is the first president to make a presidential proclamation to recognize the day.
Biden wrote: “The Biden-Harris administration is committed to fulfilling America’s promise to all Americans by eliminating discrimination and providing freedom and equality for all.”
The declaration goes into more detail about the systemic barriers faced by transgender adults and youth in their struggle for freedom and equality. Biden wrote: “Transgender Americans face discrimination in health care, housing, employment, and public accommodations.” It also touched on the violence and harassment of transgender people.
“The crisis of violence against transgender women, especially women of color, is a stain on our nation’s conscience.”
Biden He continued by highlighting the work his administration was already doing on the cause, including issuing an executive order during its first day to expand protection against discrimination for LGBT people. There is a mention of observing this day alongside public officials such as Assistant Secretary of Health, Rachel Levin. Rachel is the “first American transgender to be confirmed by the United States Senate.”
The announcement endorsed “patriotic transgender service members,” who could serve openly again after Biden issued an executive order to overturn former President Trump’s ban on transgender people in the military.
Biden also encouraged Congress to pass the Equality Act “to provide federal protection for long-awaited civil rights based on sexual orientation and gender identity.” He described the Equality Act as “an enduring legacy of the courage and endurance of the LGBTQ + movement.”
Before ending the declaration, Biden urged his fellow Americans to join him and Vice President Harris “in raising the value and dignity of every transgender person.”
