TORONTO — Surgeons at Montreal Children’s Hospital say they have successfully completed a world first in the medical world using a new procedure to connect the upper and lower parts of the esophagus in a pediatric patient using magnets.

A team at MCH came up with a hybrid procedure that hadn’t been tried before — they would surgically insert Deenen’s abdomen, swing part of his abdomen into his chest and then attach magnets to try to stretch the ends of the organs toward each other.

Medical teams from around the world have begun contacting MCH’s surgeons about denine’s groundbreaking surgery – called the FLOWERSH technique – in the hope of helping other children.
