I want to talk about the Border Force objecting to the Australian Bureau of Statistics figures on passenger arrivals yesterday, as they cited the average percentage of Australian travelers through the pandemic.
They did not dispute the growing trend to allow an increasing number of foreign nationals to travel. If you look at the ABS report, that’s what it indicates, the increase in the number of foreigners traveling here as well as the increase in the number of Australians traveling since the borders were closed last year.
In fact from May last year to May this year, nearly 200, an increase of some countries. If you look at just between April and May 2020, nine out of the top 10 countries saw an increase in people traveling here and there was an increase in each of the visa categories.
I know that today some analysis was done of the access card data which also confirmed the rise in the number of people traveling for leisure and business purposes. I think when Australians think of international travel when the borders are closed and they think of hotel quarantine, they think of Australians coming home or sometimes the highly skilled worker that’s needed here or real hardship situations, they don’t think of people who come and go. Regular work.
The same minister admitted yesterday that there are more than 30,000 people who have been admitted who have been allowed to come and go and use the hotel’s quarantine on multiple occasions. I think Australians expect these travelers to be vaccinated and we should trust them to be vaccinated.
