With the growing threat of fragmentation of the international digital ecosystem, prioritizing digital transformation has never been more important for Japan. A country’s digital transformation will largely determine its ability to adapt to profound demographic changes brought on by an aging and contracting population, find new sources of competitiveness and drivers of productivity at home, and enhance its international role in securing a data governance system that delivers the promise of free data flow with confidence. Bridging the digital divide has emerged as a central priority for both government and industry as evidenced by the launch of the new digital agency. On September 16, the Center for East Asian Policy Studies at Brookings will host a panel of experts to examine the opportunities and obstacles facing Japan to achieve its own digital transformation and influence the rules of digital trade.
