NEW DELHI – Police in western India said at least 15 patients with COVID-19 died when a hospital fire broke out early Saturday.
Police officer Rajendrasinh Chudasama said 50 other patients at Al-Rafah Hospital in Bharuch, a town in Gujarat state, were rescued by hospital workers and firefighters.
The Press Trust of India quoted Fire Officer Shalish Sansya as saying that the fire broke out in the COVID-19 ward on the ground floor and was extinguished within an hour.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
On April 23, a fire in an intensive care unit killed 13 patients from COVID-19 in Virar district on the outskirts of Mumbai.
