From the field: Bringing aid to Haiti, a country on the verge of collapse |

The August earthquake came at a time when the country was already suffering from years of underdevelopment and a political crisis triggered by the assassination of President Jovenel Moss in early July.

About 4.4 million people, nearly 40 percent of the population, face acute food insecurity according to the United Nations humanitarian agency, Ocha.

However, the funding is sorely needed, and the United Nations has launched an appeal for $187.3 million to help people start rebuilding their lives.
