in a “A new vision of what it means to be English(August 7), the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, turns our attention to the monarchy, the church, and the NHS – archaeological, militant, and half-apocalyptic. He failed to mention the most important thing for many: the food bank. This institution, staffed by sensitive volunteers, symbolizes the loss of hope for a just society.

in your report (UK government spends over £163,000 on union flags in two years, 6 August), I forgot to mention the most expensive flag ever – the one on a Johnson jet. Priced at £900,000It’s the most precious science of them all.

Interestingly enough, the Guardian newspaper should refer to Sweaty Betty – a company founded by Tamara Hill-Norton – as the “husband and wife team” (US shoe company buys Sweaty Betty in $400 million deal, August 3). Surely it is the “husband and wife team”, if their relationship is relevant at all?
