At the press conference marking the end of the G7 summit in Cornwall, Boris Johnson He said the best advice available to him was that she jumped species from the animal.
However, he said it’s important to be open about what exactly happened.
“At the moment, the advice we’ve been given is that it doesn’t look as if this specific disease of zoonotic origin came from the lab,” he said.
“Obviously any sane person would want to remain open about that.”
The summit’s closing statement called for a “timely, transparent, expert-led, science-based study of the origins of the second phase of Covid-19 from the World Health Organization”, including in China.
Speaking to reporters at the summit on Saturday, WHO chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that after nearly 3.75 million deaths worldwide, people deserve to know the source of the outbreak.
“We believe all the hypotheses should be open, and we have to move forward to the second stage to really know the origins,” he said.
