Major League Baseball is set to announce Tuesday that this year’s All-Star Game will be moved to Coors Field in Denver, the home of the Colorado Rockies, a person familiar with the decision told USA TODAY Sports.
The person only spoke on the condition of anonymity because MLB hasn’t officially made the announcement yet. The move was first reported by Denver’s Altitude TV and ESPN.
Colorado and Denver government officials immediately began pressing the MLB for the All-Star Game as soon as Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the league. She was taking the game out of Atlanta Because of voting laws passed in Georgia in March that will likely restrict access to voting for people of color.
Opinion:MLB takes the boldest step since the integration
“Major League Baseball basically supports the voting rights of all Americans and opposes ballot box restrictions,” Manfred said.
Denver Mayor Michael Hancock told Yahoo! The funding that the city’s marketing division and Midtown Partnership spent the weekend talking to MLB officials, saying Denver would be an ideal location.
“We are proud to welcome him and talk about the progressive voting system in Denver, which aims to make sure that no one is deprived of their right to vote …” Hancock, who presided over the Denver Urban League from 1998-2003, Yahoo! “We really believe we have come out on top and will continue to try to innovate, make sure this is # 1 on the basis of accessibility value.
“If you ask about it [we] They are delighted to display, and speak of the same values of making sure we never compromise one’s right to access the ballot. You do not restrict it. ”
Opinion:Brave and daring Atlanta people put themselves on the wrong side of history
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (Democratic, Colorado) issued a statement Sunday trying to persuade MLB officials to move the game to Denver.
“ The governor knows that Colorado is the best home for the all-star game, especially since Colorado also has strong laws that enable voters to cast their legal votes in any way they choose including by mail or in person. ”
The Rockies hosted the All-Star in 1998, when they won the Major League Soccer, 13-8.
