Cannes: Kira Kovalenko’s ‘Unlocking the Fist’ wins first prize in Un Certain Regard sidebar

Unclenging the Fists won the Grand Prix in the Un Certain Regard sidebar at the Cannes Film Festival, deadline reports تقارير. Written and directed by Kira Kovalenko, the Russian drama is set in a former mining town in North Ossetia and tells the story of a young woman (Milana Aguzarova) who struggles to bear the weight of her family ties.

“My greatest challenge has been my constant struggle to transform my sense of weakness, vulnerability, and powerlessness into an art form,” Kovalenko told us. “Overall, I feel that the act of making a movie is a constant struggle: struggle for every frame, struggle against circumstances, and most importantly struggle against yourself.”

Kovalenko made her debut with the 2016 movie “Sofichka”.

Andrea Arnold, who just showed her latest work “Cow” at Cannes, Chaired the Un Certain Regard jury this year.
