GKIDS’ latest acquisition of BELLE, from famed director Mamoru Hosoda and his company Studio Chizu, is an official Cannes Film Festival selection and will make its world debut in the Cannes Premiere section on Thursday, July 15. It was. His first film, Mirai, made his director’s Fortnight debut in 2018 before receiving an Academy Award® nomination for Best Animated Feature. GKIDS BELLE will be released theatrically in North America in its original Japanese language and new English dubbed version this winter, and will qualify the film for the 2021 Awards.

After my previous film Mireille was selected for two weeks by directors at the Cannes Film Festival, I am honored to have Bell for the premiere section of the official selection. It is extremely rare for an animated film to be selected for participation in Cannes, and I believe this selection is a signal to the audience of the importance This new film and the growing recognition of future animated films,” Hosoda said.

Hosoda’s much-anticipated new animated film, BELLE, is an original story written and directed by the famous director whose previous films include Mirai, The Boy and the Beast, Wolf Children, Summer Wars, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and more. Hosoda is joined by longtime production partner and studio co-founder Chizu Yuichiro Saito, as producer on the title.

At BELLE, the Japanese creative team worked in collaboration with a roster of international talent. Character designer Jane Kim, the artist behind many popular Disney features including Moana, Tangled, and Frozen, designed the honorary Belle. Oscar nominees Tom Moore and Ross Stewart (Wolfolkers, Song of the Sea, The Secret of Kills) also joined the team, contributing artwork to the various virtual fantasy worlds within the film. Hosoda continues his film collaboration with architects, and is joined by up-and-coming British architect and designer Eric Wong, who designed the virtual world of “U.” After finishing the team, composer Ludvig Forssell, known for his collaboration with video game author Hideo Kojima (Death Stranding, Metal Gear Solid V), joined the score team for the film.

BELLE is scheduled to be released in theaters in Japan beginning July 16.
