At least 130,000 families in England were displaced during the pandemic’s first year, despite government bans on evictions, according to data obtained by the Observer.

An analysis of published government homelessness statistics and figures collected under the Freedom of Information Act from around 70% of local authorities in England shows that councils assessed 132,362 families as entitled to a ‘relief duty’, with the family already considered homeless.

The people who have become homeless during the pandemic are mainly those who have fled domestic violence or have asked their family or friends to leave.
