A series of volcanic eruptions blanketed parts of the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent with ash and smoke.
Local residents reported “the fall of extremely heavy ash and the smell of sulfur” and Thousands of people have been forced from their homes.
La Soufrière, which has been dormant for decades, started showing volcanic activity in December, but increased this week.
The first sign that an eruption was imminent came Thursday evening, when a lava dome became visible at La Soufriere.
Just before 09:00 on Friday (13:00 GMT), seismologists from the University of the West Indies confirmed a “explosive volcanic eruption”.
The evacuated people were taken to cruise ships and safer parts of the island.
