For countless European politicians and diplomats, particularly in countries that have invested so much in support of NATO’s two-decade mission in Afghanistan, the events of the past weeks have served as an internal check. Biden, based on Trump’s deal with the Taliban, announced a complete withdrawal that his NATO allies had no choice but to follow. While European officials express concerns about the country’s humanitarian plight, as well as the potential for massive new influxes of Afghan refugees, they are also privately complaining about the lack of real consultation with the Biden administration.
