The United Nations told the BBC that the situation in Afghanistan was a “humanitarian catastrophe” and one of the worst crises in the world. About 18 million people, more than half of the country’s population, are in dire need of life-saving support.
There has been a sharp escalation in violence across the country between the Taliban and Afghan government forces after the withdrawal of foreign forces.
The BBC’s Yogita Lemai traveled to the strategically important Kunduz province in northern Afghanistan. All of it, except for the provincial capital, fell into the hands of the Taliban. The United Nations says that 35,000 newly displaced people have arrived in Kunduz city in just over a month in search of safety and shelter.
