Saturday: The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released new data on Covid-19 on Saturday, reporting 7 new deaths and 220 new positive cases.

While data from the county showed that hospitalizations continue to decline, the numbers of cases and deaths reported may reflect delays in the weekend reports.

Today’s figures bring Los Angeles County to a total of 24,338 deaths, and 1,243,712 confirmed cases.

At the time of reporting, 273 county residents have been hospitalized with Covid-19, 18% of them are in the ICU. Test results have now been made available to more than 6,750,000 people, 17% of whom have tested positive. The daily test positive rate today is 0.3%.

Three of the new deaths today were of individuals over the age of 80, and two people between the ages of 65 and 79 were lost to the virus. The age of the deceased was between 50 and 64 years old, while the last of the deceased was between 30 and 49 years old.

Earlier this month, Los Angeles County entered the yellow (or less restricted) level of the California reopening scheme. Covid-19 vaccines are currently available to anyone 12 years of age or over, whether they live or work in the county. On June 15th, LA County will join California in a full reopening process.

Today, Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer encouraged residents to safely celebrate Memorial Day. “We are all excited that this Memorial Day looks very different from the last Memorial Day – it gives me great satisfaction that so many of us are able to meet with family and friends again,” she said. “If you are celebrating with an elderly person who has not been vaccinated, celebrate safely outdoors using masks and distance or virtual. I encourage everyone who has not yet been vaccinated to make time for vaccinations. The vaccine provides the best protection and keeps Los Angeles County transmission low.”
